I’m Tianqin Zhu, a Los Angeles-based director and editor. I’ve worked across narrative filmmaking, vertical series, interviews, and short-form digital content.
I’m drawn to stories where humor, tension, and the unexpected can coexist—and to the small choices in performance, framing, and rhythm that make a world inside the frame.
My Approach
Filmmaking is a process of discovery. I like to begin with any idea, vague or clear, then leave enough room to direct performance, images, and rhythm to turn them into something good, something unexpected along the way.
On Set!
I look for clarity before complexity—strong blocking, purposeful composition, and performances that feel alive, not over-controlled. The goal is to create images that carry the scene's emotion before the edit begins.
In editing Room!
Editing is where I find a story's final rhythm. A cut can change tension, redirect attention, or completely reshape a performance. I treat every frame as part of a larger emotional progression, not just a sequence of good shots.
